Penn College wrestlers achieve strong performance at NY-PA Challenge

Saturday night at the NY-PA Challenge held at New York University, Penn College's wrestling team improved their duals record to 6-1 for the season. The Wildcats secured victories against Merchant Marine with a score of 39-12 and Hunter College with a decisive 54-5, before facing defeat against host NYU, finishing at 36-14.

Carter Davis (165 pounds), Nicholas Woodruff (197 pounds), and Nicholai Brotzman (285 pounds) all went unbeaten in their respective three bouts for Penn College. Blake Dergham (133), Isaac McGregor (141), and Travis Green (174) concluded the event with two wins and one loss each.

Against Merchant Marine, eight Wildcats contributed points. Woodruff and Green achieved victories by falls, while Brotzman and Justin Adams (125) won by forfeits. McGregor, David M'Balla (149), and Davis earned major decisions, with Dergham securing a win by decision.

In the matchup against Hunter College, Penn College claimed victory in nine out of ten bouts. Brotzman, Woodruff, Green, Davis, Cavin Napoletano (157), McGregor, and Dergham all scored falls. Luke Heimbach (125) and Cole Shupp (184) added wins through forfeits.

Facing NYU presented more challenges as the Wildcats were initially held scoreless through five bouts. Davis eventually got them on the scoreboard with a major decision win at 165 pounds. Woodruff followed suit with another major decision at 197 pounds. Brotzman concluded the match by pinning Evan Anderson in just over a minute; Anderson is ranked third in NWCA Region 3 for heavyweight.

Looking ahead, Penn College is set to host Keystone College for Senior Day on Saturday, February 1st at 1 p.m.
