Penn College and Cairn University faced off in a nonconference baseball doubleheader on Tuesday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Wildcats managed to split the games, losing the first 6-4 but bouncing back to win the second 13-5, bringing their season record to 7-11.
In the opening game, Penn College established an early 2-0 lead with Jaydon Goebel's single and an error bringing in two runs. Cairn responded with three runs in the third inning. Adam Aldenderfer tied the game for Penn College with a single, and Shawn Townsend's hit put them ahead 4-3. However, Cairn secured victory by scoring three more runs in the sixth inning.
Jaiden Augustine and Quinn Hanafin each had two hits for Penn College. Griffin Vollman pitched five innings as the starter, allowing three earned runs on four hits while striking out three and walking four. Dennis Prestash took over in relief but fell to a 1-1 record after two innings.
The second game saw Penn College take an early lead again, this time 2-0, thanks to an Eckard sacrifice and Hanafin's single. After Cairn added one run in the second inning, Penn College capitalized on a two-out error with seven runs in their half of the inning. Key plays included Townsend being hit with bases loaded and Goebel hitting a three-run triple.
The Wildcats extended their lead to 11-1 with RBIs from Goebel and Hanafin in the fourth inning. Though Cairn narrowed the gap with four runs in the fifth inning, Penn College finalized their score at 13-5 following another error and Matt Munoz' single.
Goebel ended up with two hits and drove in four runs during the second game. Gabe Reptsik improved his record to 1-0 after pitching 4.1 innings where he allowed two earned runs along with two strikeouts and two walks.
Penn College is scheduled to return to action against Wilkes at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
