Pennsylvania College of Technology's golf team, led by coach Rob Lytle, is preparing for its spring season with aspirations of capturing the United East Conference championship and earning a third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Championship. Coach Lytle discussed last fall's busy tournament schedule, which was designed to prepare the team for these goals.
Senior golfer Peyton Mussina of Montoursville remains a key player, continuing his strong performance from the fall tournaments. Mussina previously medaled in the United East Fall Preview for the third consecutive year. The team's first spring outing is the Pennsylvania Classic, taking place Saturday and Sunday at the Penn State Blue Course, hosted by Penn State Altoona.
The Wildcats will participate in four two-day tournaments this spring, leading up to the conference championship scheduled for April 25-26. Coach Lytle expressed satisfaction with the fall season, mentioning that the busy schedule allowed the selection of top tournaments for the spring.
Peyton Mussina has achieved 18 top-three finishes during his three-year tenure, medaling nine times. As of March 19, Mussina was ranked 21st nationally among Division III golfers and second in Region 3.
The team also includes senior Will Orwig from Mifflintown, junior Gunner Redmond from Lock Haven, sophomores Brady Handy from Huntingdon and Logan Gawlinski from Kittanning. Juniors Jordan Lestochi from Altoona and Brandon Vaughn from Chambersburg, as well as freshmen Matt Mesaris from Pittston and Joel Toburen from Boyertown, are expected to contribute.
"We've got nine really good players. We've been able to play since mid-February, so we've been outside. I'm excited for the spring," Coach Lytle said, stressing the team's hard work and determination. "They know what's at stake. They know what the goal is — to win a third conference championship — and they are focused on that."
The team's extensive schedule in April aims to position them well for the conference championship, aligning with their ultimate goal of victory.
