Pennsylvania College of Technology's golf team is gearing up for the spring season, aiming to defend its United East Championship title and secure a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship. The Wildcats will commence their season at the Pennsylvania Classic, hosted by Penn State Altoona on Friday and Saturday.
Coach Rob Lytle, entering his second full season, expressed optimism about the team's preparation. "Spring practice has gone well so far. We have been fortunate to have some good spring weather to get on the course and be outside. The team has been working hard on all aspects of their games to prepare for the season," he said.
The team includes returning starters Peyton Mussina, Gavin Baer, Will Orwig, Trevor Keaton, and Gunner Redmond. Last year, Mussina was recognized on the UE first team while Redmond and Orwig made it to the second team. Keaton was named to the all-sportsmanship team, and Lytle received the UE Coach of the Year award.
"Mussina is coming off a great fall season (he medaled three times and was second twice). He is never one to be satisfied, so he has put in a lot of hard work on his game over the winter. (The others) are equally working hard to improve over last fall," Lytle noted.
In previous outings, the Wildcats secured two first-place finishes and several top-three placements. Their goal remains consistent: "As a team, we need to be more consistent scoring-wise. All of us have one goal in mind, and that is to repeat as conference champions and make a return trip to the NCAA Division III Championship," Lytle stated.
Newcomers Logan Gawlinski and Brett Keenan have shown significant progress since joining the program. Additionally, Brady Handy joined this spring as a promising addition.
"The spring schedule will be a good test for us leading into the conference championship," Lytle explained. Notable events include "the Northeast Shootout hosted by Swarthmore College" at DuPont Country Club. The Wildcats aim for readiness ahead of their conference championship at Philmont Country Club.
