Academics, employers, and state legislators convened in Pittsburgh to discuss how artificial intelligence (AI) can transform Pennsylvania's economy. The joint hearing, organized by Sen. Tracy Pennycuick, Sen. Dave Argall, and Rep. David Rowe, brought together professionals from various sectors to explore AI's potential.

Representatives from Pittsburgh's healthcare, banking, and aerospace industries highlighted AI integration in their sectors. They also addressed Pennsylvania's electric grid issues and energy policies affecting AI development.

“Pennsylvania has a remarkable opportunity to leverage cutting-edge developments in artificial intelligence to spur investment and revolutionize our economy,” noted Pennycuick. “Today’s hearing will help shape the General Assembly’s approach as we look to promote, expand, and strategically harness AI technology for the benefit of our entire Commonwealth.”

Rep. Rowe emphasized the strain AI places on the electric grid, stating the state's potential to lead innovation. “As the testifiers validated, AI is placing unprecedented pressure on our electric grid, raising important questions about energy capacity, reliability, and long-term planning,” he said.

Ken Zapinski from Pittsburgh Works Together suggested building power plants and utilizing industrial sites to address infrastructure issues. Dr. Hooman Rashidi of the University of Pittsburgh highlighted AI's role in healthcare, emphasizing CPACE’s work in diagnostics and education.

Dr. Andrew Horchler from Astrobotic Technology, Inc. explained AI's contribution to space exploration, while Dr. Bruno Abreu from the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center discussed AI’s impact on railway safety.

“Artificial intelligence is the future,” articulated Argall, underscoring the significance of the testimonies for Pennsylvania’s AI initiatives.
