Rep. Jamie Flick of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives expressed his concerns following Governor Josh Shapiro's budget proposal for the 2025-26 fiscal year. After attending a joint session of the General Assembly, Flick released a statement addressing his views on the governor’s plan.
Flick stated, “I had hoped for more substantial investments that would truly benefit the people of our Commonwealth. The budget falls short of addressing the urgent needs of our communities, and it fails to provide the meaningful relief our taxpayers deserve.”
He criticized the proposed 7.5% spending increase, calling it "unacceptable" due to its potential impact on the General Fund Surplus. He emphasized that fiscal responsibility is crucial at this time and expressed concern over increasing government spending, which he believes would further burden taxpayers.
“Taxpayers across our state are already feeling the strain, and this increase in government spending will only add to the burden they bear,” said Flick. He urged for a focus on efficiency and accountability in spending, aligning with a sentiment once shared by Ronald Reagan: “It's time to restore the perception that each person is accountable for their actions.”
Flick remains cautiously optimistic but continues to advocate for a budget balancing necessary investments with fiscal responsibility.
The governor’s address marks just the beginning of Pennsylvania's annual state budget process. The House Appropriations Committee will begin hearings on February 18 to examine details of the governor’s plan and scrutinize how state departments are using their funding. Both the General Assembly and governor have until June 30 to finalize the budget.
