Gov. Josh Shapiro has expressed frustration, stating he is tired of getting his “ass kicked” by other states, specifically noting Pennsylvania's economic development struggles compared to Ohio. Authorities and planners in western Pennsylvania have echoed concerns about the difficulties in attracting businesses to the state.

West Virginia recently secured a $3.3 billion combined cycle electric generation plant, highlighting its support for the coal and natural gas industries as well as the integrity of the electric grid. This development has led some Pittsburgh boilermakers to seek work outside Pennsylvania.

Despite having more natural gas than West Virginia, Gov. Shapiro has prioritized solar energy initiatives. He announced a plan for 50% of the commonwealth government’s electricity to come from renewable sources, aiming to surpass California in solar power for government operations.

In May, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued Order No. 1920, which supports climate goals not approved by Congress. Some states interpret this order as a means to socialize rates across the 13-state electric grid, potentially increasing costs for Pennsylvania ratepayers due to policy decisions in other states like Illinois.

Gov. Shapiro joined governors from New Jersey, Maryland, and Illinois in signing a letter supporting FERC's Order No. 1920. Critics argue that this move disregards Pennsylvania's status as an energy producer and imposes additional costs on its residents while benefiting states pursuing green agendas.

Shapiro is considered a potential vice-presidential candidate alongside a presidential hopeful who opposes fracking and offshore drilling—stances that conflict with Pennsylvania's significant natural gas production.

Senator Gene Yaw questions how these policies benefit Pennsylvanians amidst competition from neighboring states and evolving energy strategies.

Senator Gene Yaw represents Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga, and Union counties and chairs the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee.
