A project to reclaim abandoned mine lands near the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train in Ashland has been awarded a state grant of $605,849. The grant was announced by Sen. Dave Argall and Rep. Tim Twardzik, who expressed their appreciation for the funding.
Sen. Argall highlighted the significance of the Pioneer Tunnel in preserving the history of coal mining and the sacrifices made by generations of miners. He said, "There’s no better place to learn more about the backbreaking and dangerous labor that our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents needed to perform in the mines to feed their families than Pioneer Tunnel. I’m thankful they were awarded this highly competitive funding to make the surrounding area safer."
Rep. Twardzik emphasized the importance of revitalizing and safeguarding the historic site. He stated, "This funding underscores our commitment to revitalizing and safeguarding this historic site, contributing to the well-being of Schuylkill County residents and fostering sustainable tourism. I am truly happy to see these resources allocated to such a meaningful project. If you haven’t visited the mine tour yet, I hope you will plan a trip. It is an amazing look at the work and sacrifices miners made to fuel the Industrial Revolution and war effort."
The grant will be used for a project to backfill approximately 10,000 feet of open mine pits and several deep mine openings on Ashland Mountain. This initiative will not only enhance safety at the mine by reinforcing the tunnel but also have positive environmental impacts through reforestation efforts. Ed Wytovich, a member of the Board of Directors of the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train, explained, "This grant will lead to increased safety at the mine by reinforcing the tunnel. It will also be good for the environment by reforesting part of the mountain. Ultimately, it should end up favorably impacting everyone who visits the area, including local ATV riders."
In addition to the safety and environmental benefits, the project will create an educational area at the end of the rail trail. Part of the Mammoth pit will be left open for visitors to learn about mine reclamation. This fenced-in safety area will provide valuable insights into the process of reclaiming abandoned mine lands.
The Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train is a significant historical site that offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience a real anthracite coal mine. Originally a working mine until 1931, it was restored and reopened in 1962 thanks to dedicated community volunteers. The site now features mine tours, rides on coal-hauling "lokies," and exhibits showcasing coal mining artifacts.
The grant was awarded through the Abandoned Mine Lands and Acid Mine Drainage Grant Program, which aims to protect the health and safety of communities affected by abandoned coal mines. The funding will contribute to the preservation of the Pioneer Tunnel and the surrounding area, ensuring its historical significance is celebrated for years to come.
