State grants totaling over $450,000 have been awarded to two outdoor recreation projects in Carbon County. Rep. Doyle Heffley and Sen. Dave Argall announced the grants, expressing their satisfaction with the funds returning to the county.

One of the projects receiving funding is the improvement of Memorial Park in Jim Thorpe. The $250,000 grant will be used for phase three of the park's rehabilitation construction project. Maureen Sterner, the Borough Manager for Jim Thorpe, expressed her excitement about the award, stating, "Our basketball courts are one of the most actively used items in the park. These funds will assist us to continue with our phased project and allows us to make Memorial Park even more accessible for all ages and abilities."

The funds will be used to construct two basketball courts, fencing, outdoor lighting, and ADA adjustable basketball hoops. The additions will enhance the park's appeal and provide opportunities for children and individuals of all abilities to enjoy the new courts.

The second project awarded a grant is the upgrade of Christman Field in Franklin Township. The field serves as the main local field for Little League and softball teams in the area. The $212,093 grant will be used to make major improvements, including a new Little League field, t-ball field, parking lot, and walking trail.

Fred Kemmerer Jr., Chairman of the Franklin Township Board of Supervisors, expressed gratitude for the funding, stating, "These funds will help us make needed upgrades to Municipal Park and the Little League facilities, which will continue to give the youth of our community and surrounding communities a place to call their own."

The grants were awarded by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program. This program aims to develop, rehabilitate, and improve public parks, recreation areas, greenways, trails, and rivers. The funding for this program is derived from unconventional gas well impact fees.

The importance of quality outdoor spaces has become even more evident in recent years. Rep. Heffley emphasized this, saying, "The field's popularity shows the need for upgrades, and this funding will significantly help." Sen. Argall echoed this sentiment, stating, "The last few years have demonstrated more than ever why it is so important to have quality outdoor spaces for us all to enjoy."

The grants awarded to Memorial Park and Christman Field will undoubtedly enhance the recreational opportunities and community cohesion in Carbon County. The support from Rep. Heffley and Sen. Argall ensures that these projects can move forward, benefiting residents and visitors alike.
