State Senator Gene Yaw and State Representative Tina Pickett have announced a state investment of $7,736,520 awarded to the Towanda Municipal Authority in Bradford County. The funding comes from the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) and is intended for improvements to the wastewater treatment plant.

The funds will be utilized to construct a new headworks building equipped with fine screening units and grit removal equipment. The project also involves demolishing an existing building, rehabilitating the ultraviolet disinfection system, and repairing or replacing air supply piping, tank piping, and pumps. Additionally, upgrades will be made to communication and electrical systems.

Senator Yaw stated, “As we look at the aging infrastructure of many of our local communities, it has never been more important to support their efforts to improve water quality through upgraded systems.” He emphasized that handling wastewater properly benefits both citizens and the environment.

Representative Pickett expressed her full support for the grant: “I am in full support of this PENNVEST grant, which will make critical improvements to Towanda’s wastewater treatment system.” She noted that the project would enhance service for hundreds of customers while preventing a steep rate increase for residents.

Both Yaw and Pickett highlighted that the current system serves nearly 2,000 residential customers across Towanda and Monroe Boroughs as well as Towanda, North Towanda, Monroe, and Wysox Townships. The upgrades are expected to help control future rate increases for consumers.

PENNVEST was established by Act 16 of 1988 as an independent agency providing financial assistance for constructing drinking water, sewer, and stormwater projects throughout Pennsylvania.
