The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team was unable to maintain the momentum from their previous victory against Rider, falling to George Mason with a score of 85-53 at Eaglebank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. This loss leaves Penn with a record of 4-8 as they head into the Christmas break, while George Mason improves to 8-4.
Penn managed to make ten three-pointers during the game, marking the second consecutive game and third time this season that they have reached double figures in this category. Junior Ethan Roberts achieved his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds, also leading his team in assists (5) and steals (2). Junior Michael Zanoni led Penn's scoring efforts with 11 points, including three three-pointers. Sophomore Niklas Polonowski added another double-digit performance with 10 points.
Senior Nick Spinoso faced foul trouble throughout the game and fouled out midway through the second half after contributing eight points, six rebounds, and two assists. For George Mason, Jalen Haynes scored 15 points and secured 10 rebounds. The Patriots had four other players reach double figures: Giovanni Emejuru (12), Jared Billups (11), Darius Maddox (10), and Justin Begg (10). Maddox also provided six assists for his team.
The game saw an early lead by Mason at 14-9 before Penn tied it at 23-23 following a transition three-pointer by George Smith. However, Penn only managed one more score before halftime as Mason extended their lead to ten points at halftime with a score of 35-25.
In the second half, any chance of a comeback for Penn was thwarted as Mason scored five of the first six points and eventually expanded their lead to more than twenty points. The Quakers were unable to close the gap beyond eighteen points for the remainder of the match.
Penn will take a break for Christmas before facing Penn State next Sunday. The game is scheduled for a tip-off at 1 p.m.
