Penn College's baseball team suffered a defeat in their United East series opener against St. Mary's, with an 8-2 loss on Friday afternoon. This result leaves the Wildcats at 4-6 in UE play and 15-15 overall, while the Seahawks improved to 3-7 in UE and 6-14 overall.
The game saw St. Mary's take an early lead of 6-0 before Penn College managed to score two runs in the sixth inning. Dallas Griess contributed significantly by hitting a single and advancing around the bases through a steal and wild pitch, which set up Shawn Townsend for a sacrifice fly that brought Griess home. Later, John Croasdale hit an RBI single allowing Jaiden Augustine, who had walked earlier, to score.
St. Mary's secured their victory by adding two more runs in the eighth inning, resulting in the final score of 8-2.
On the offensive side for Penn College, Griess led with two hits out of six for his team and scored once. Quinn Hanafin, Adam Aldenderfer, Jaydon Goebel, and Croasdale each recorded one hit as well. Jonas McGrath pitched for 3.2 innings striking out four batters while Ethan Eckard added another four strikeouts over 3.1 innings in relief.
For St. Mary's, Walters and Smith both achieved two hits out of four attempts each and together they accumulated five RBIs along with three runs scored.
The series is set to conclude with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at noon between the Wildcats and Seahawks.
