Penn College's baseball team split a United East Conference doubleheader against Penn State Abington on Sunday. The Wildcats secured a 6-2 win in the first game but were defeated 9-8 in a weather-shortened second game. Following these matches, Penn College's conference record stands at 4-5, with an overall record of 13-14. Meanwhile, Abington holds an 8-4 conference record and is 11-17 overall.
In the first game, Penn College took an early lead when Quinn Hanafin doubled to bring in Shane Townsend. Although Abington managed to tie the score at 1-1 by the fourth inning, the Wildcats responded by scoring four runs in the bottom half of that inning, leading to a 5-1 advantage. Logan Hinnershitz contributed with an RBI single that scored John Croasdale and later scored himself on a bases-loaded walk by Jaiden Augustine. Hanafin drove in two more runs with a single that allowed Dallas Griess and Brandon Shane to score.
Matt Munoz added another run for Penn College with an RBI single in the sixth inning. Hanafin ended up going 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Griffin Vollman secured the win by allowing just two runs over five innings.
The second game saw Abington take control early with an 8-0 lead before Penn College mounted a comeback attempt. The Wildcats scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second, and five more in the third to level the score. However, Abington managed to regain their lead by adding another run in the fifth inning before securing victory after six innings due to weather conditions.
Griess and Augustine both had three hits each from their positions at the top of the order and together accounted for five runs. Shawn Townsend, Hanafin, and Shane each recorded two RBIs during this matchup.
Next up for Penn College is a nonconference doubleheader against Alfred University scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m.
