On February 14, 2024, Representative Joe Hamm (R-Lycoming/Sullivan) announced that forty-three fire and emergency medical services (EMS) companies in the 84th District have been awarded grant funding through the 2023-24 Pennsylvania Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program. Hamm expressed his gratitude for the state funding, stating, "I'm thankful so many local fire and EMS companies in the 84th District were awarded this state funding. These grants are much needed and will help our brave first responders with their critically important and dangerous jobs."

The grant funding will support various projects and programs, including facility upgrades, equipment purchases, debt reduction, training and certification, education and public outreach, and recruitment and retention efforts. Fire companies were also able to apply for construction savings accounts for new facility construction.

Among the organizations that received grants in Lycoming County are the Citizens Hose Company of Jersey Shore, Eldred Township Volunteer Fire Company, Hepburn Township Volunteer Fire Company, Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department, Independent Hose Company No. 1, Lairdsville Community Volunteer Fire Company Inc., Muncy Area Volunteer Fire Company Inc., Muncy Township Volunteer Fire Company, Nippenose Valley Volunteer Fire Company, Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company Inc., Picture Rocks Vol. Fire Company Ambulance, Plunketts Creek Township Fire Department, Ralston Volunteer Fire Company Inc., Trout Run Volunteer Fire Company, Waterville Volunteer Fire Company, Willing Hand Hose Company #1, and Woodward Township Volunteer Fire Company.

The Pennsylvania Fire Company and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program is an ongoing funding program created by the General Assembly. The grants are generated from slot machine gaming proceeds and not General Fund tax revenue. The program is administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, with the application process handled through the Office of the State Fire Commissioner (OSFC). The funding amounts are contingent on the recipients filing their grant agreements with OSFC.

This grant program is vital in providing the necessary resources and support to local fire and EMS companies, enabling them to continue serving their communities effectively and efficiently. The dedication and bravery of these first responders are commendable, and it is crucial that they have the tools and equipment they need to carry out their duties safely.
