A new trail in Weatherly and improvements to Ashton Park in Lansford have moved closer to realization following the award of state grants through the Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program. State Senator Dave Argall and Representative Doyle Heffley worked with local officials to secure this funding.

"This funding will improve cycling access for local residents to the Weatherly area and its iconic train station, which will also boost tourism for the community," said Heffley. "I'm equally excited to see this support going towards Ashton Park in Lansford, a wonderful space that will benefit children and families, providing a place for generations to come to gather, play and enjoy the outdoors."

Argall added, "I'm grateful this highly competitive state funding will provide new opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Our communities are healthier and stronger when we have quality parks and trails for all to enjoy."

Weatherly Borough received $42,500 for exploring a connection from the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails to the trailhead in Weatherly. The borough is currently working on a 5-mile connection to the Delaware and Lehigh Trail and Lehigh Gorge State Park. This connectivity is expected to positively impact the local economy.

Lansford Borough was awarded $54,776 for upgrades at Ashton Park. These include installing new fencing, additional rides, and handicapped accessible rides and ramps.

The Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program aims at supporting development, rehabilitation, and improvement of public parks, greenways, trails, and other recreational spaces.
