Representative Rich Irvin (R-Franklin/Huntingdon) has publicly criticized the state budget proposal put forth by Governor in a statement released today. The governor's proposal aims to spend $48.34 billion, an 8.4% increase in state dollars compared to the current fiscal year budget.
Irvin expressed his concerns about the budget proposal, stating, "Today's budget proposal contained a laundry list of spending that would wipe out half of the state's reserves and lead to an increase in taxes." He further criticized the governor's plan as "wholly irresponsible and not based in reality." Irvin highlighted the proposal's intention to add $2.5 billion to the state budget for new and expanded government programs, which he believes contradicts the desires of the people he represents. According to Irvin, the people of Pennsylvania want a smaller government and, at the very least, no increase in taxes.
Emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility, Irvin stated, "The Commonwealth - like the people who call it home - needs to live within its means." He expressed his expectation for the governor to be more flexible in his approach and work with the General Assembly to create a more reasonable and realistic budget that focuses on the core functions of government. Irvin firmly asserted that he would not support the current proposal, stating, "What was unveiled today is not something that could ever gain an affirmative vote from me. I expect better, and the people of Pennsylvania deserve better."
The House Appropriations Committee will begin conducting hearings with various state agencies starting the week of February 19 to further examine the details of the governor's plan. A final budget agreement is required by June 30.
Irvin's statement reflects the concerns of many constituents who believe that the proposed budget is excessive and would burden taxpayers. The representative's call for fiscal responsibility and a focus on core government functions resonates with those who want to see a smaller and more efficient government in Pennsylvania. As the budget discussions continue, it remains to be seen if the governor will take into account the concerns expressed by Irvin and others who share his perspective.
