State Senator Gene Yaw and State Representative Clint Owlett have announced a $1,024,000 state investment allocated to the Wellsboro Municipal Authority for upgrades to the Borough of Wellsboro's wastewater system. The funding, provided by the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST), will be used for the rehabilitation and conversion of the wastewater treatment plant's existing chlorine tank to an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection channel, as well as the installation of new UV disinfection equipment.

Senator Yaw emphasized the importance of supporting local communities in improving water quality through upgraded systems, stating, "Ensuring our communities are equipped to properly handle wastewater is good for our citizens and good for our environment." Representative Owlett echoed this sentiment, highlighting the role of wastewater infrastructure in supporting public health and safety and creating a high quality of life for communities.

The funding will also allow for improvements to the structure that houses the treatment facility, including a new roof, stairs, and handrailing. The existing system currently serves nearly 1,500 households in the Borough, and these upgrades will help prevent future rate increases for consumers.

Louis Rachiele, Wellsboro Borough Manager, expressed gratitude for the continued support of the Borough of Wellsboro, stating, "This award will allow the Borough to continue to make needed improvements to necessary infrastructure that not only serves the Borough but surrounding communities as well."

In addition to the grant, PENNVEST has also approved a $108,100 loan for the same project. PENNVEST, established in 1988, is an independent agency of the Commonwealth that provides financial assistance for the construction of drinking water, sewer, and stormwater projects throughout Pennsylvania.
