A bill aimed at cracking down on looters and thieves has gained strong bipartisan support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The bill, introduced by Senator Dave Argall, now awaits the signature of the Governor to become law.

The inspiration behind this bill comes from the alarming reports of widespread looting in Philadelphia and other cities. Senator Argall expressed his concern for the small business owners who are being targeted by these criminals, stating, "Small business owners are under siege. As rising theft continues to grip communities across Pennsylvania, we need to act now!"

The United States Chamber of Commerce highlights the devastating economic impact of organized retail theft, which has resulted in the loss of nearly 700,000 jobs nationwide and caused over $125 billion in economic losses.

Senate Bill 596 proposes the creation of a first-degree felony offense for thieves who steal $50,000 worth of goods with the intent to resell them. This offense carries a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years. Additionally, the bill seeks to establish the Office of Deputy Attorney General for Organized Retail Crime Theft, which would be responsible for targeting the leaders of these criminal rings.

Senator Argall emphasized the urgency of taking action, stating, "Retail theft has become a plague on employers large and small in recent years. We must take harsh action to deter these criminals and protect family-sustaining jobs in Pennsylvania."

The passage of this bill is seen as a significant step towards addressing the issue of organized retail theft and protecting the livelihoods of business owners across the state. With bipartisan support and the potential to make a substantial impact, it is now up to the Governor to sign this bill into law.
