West Chester University’s Valerie Van Kuijck and Dara Spavlik, Shippensburg University’s Agus Garibaldi, and Kutztown University’s Marci Scheuing headlined the 2022 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Field Hockey All-Conference Teams. Van Kuijck received Athlete of the Year and Dara Spavlik won Defensive Athlete of the Year for the Golden Rams, while Garibaldi was recognized as Freshman of the Year, and Scheuing as Coach of the Year.
All-conference teams and major awards are determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Valerie Van Kuijck claims her first Athlete of the Year honor after being picked as Rookie of the Year in 2021. Van Kuijck continued to dominate in 2022, leading the conference and the nation in multiple statistical categories. The midfielder’s 15 total assists rank first in all of Division II, while her 2.61 points per game rank second. Within the league, Van Kuijck’s 66 shots on goal are good for first place, and her four game-winning goals crack the Top 5. This year, she received Athlete of the Week awards from both the PSAC and the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
Fellow Golden Ram Dara Spavlik was named Defensive Athlete of the Year after taking part in a defense that allowed opponents only 1.06 goals per game—one of lowest opponent scoring averages in the conference. At the back position, Spavlik also guided West Chester to sixth in the nation in shutouts per game with an average of .39. This year marks the second time that Spavlik has made an all-conference team.
From Shippensburg, Agus Garibaldi was selected as Freshman of the Year. Garibaldi quickly made a strong impression in the conference by becoming the leading scorer on a competitive Raiders team. Garibaldi ended her freshman regular season campaign with 16 goals, 2.24 points per game, and 59 shots on goal—all ranking top-three in the conference. Her offensive production also included four game-winning goals—third in the league—and six assists. Garibaldi’s impressive debut season earned two PSAC Athlete of the Week awards, one NFHCA Player of the Week award, and assisted Shippensburg in becoming the No. 2 seed in the PSAC Championship Tournament.
The final award recipient is Kutztown’s Marci Scheuing as the Coach of the Year. She guided the Golden Bears to a conference-best 16-2 overall, 8-1 PSAC record to gain the 2022 regular season title. Under her leadership, Kutztown’s offense had the second-best scoring average in the conference with 3.67 goals per game, while the defense ranked second in the nation in shutouts per game with .56. This will be Scheuing’s second Coach of the Year honor after winning it previously in 2015, and four of her current players earned All-PSAC honors.
Of all 39 honorees, 10 are repeating all-conference selections, while 29 have been named to an All-PSAC team for the first time in their respective careers.
