Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania issued the following announcement on Dec. 1.

Samantha Whelan, of Exeter, is one of nine recipients of the Lock Haven University Alumni Association Scholarship for the 2021-22 school year. Whelan is a sophomore transfer student majoring in biology at LHU.

Whelan received the LHU Alumni Association Scholarship in large part due to her academic achievements. She is also a member of LHU's Biology Club, the International Students Club and the Global Viewers Club.

Whelan transferred to The Haven because the campus and admissions team made her feel welcomed and "at home" while she visited campus during the admissions process and added that everyone at LHU has been extremely kind and helpful.

"At LHU, I feel like I can be myself," she said. "Anybody who is considering Lock Haven University should know what such of a wonderful place it is."

Since becoming a student, Whelan is also impressed by how much she has learned from her professors and has expressed great gratitude for the role the LHU Alumni Association Scholarship is playing in helping her achieve her academic goals.

"Receiving the LHU Alumni Association Scholarship is a great honor," she said. "The scholarship is also essential to helping me focus on academics, rather than on how I am going to pay for my education."

Lifelong learning and furthering her education are things that have always been at the forefront of Whelan's long-term goals. She said her professors and campus staff at LHU are doing a great job guiding her on her academic journey.

In the future, Whelan aims to work in the field of genetics, possibly as a genetic counselor.
