PSAC Volleyball Athletes of the Week – 7

Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference issued the following announcement on Oct. 19.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced its volleyball athletes of the week this week. In the PSAC East, Jaime Byrne of West Chester University was the top offensive performer and Claire Ellis of Shepherd University was named Defensive Athlete of the Week. From the PSAC West, Lauren Sampson of Gannon University was named Athlete of the Week, while Hannah Vuylsteke of Mercyhurst University earned defensive honors.

Jaime Byrne

Sophomore

Bethlehem, Pa. / Liberty 

Jaime Byrne helped West Chester to a 3-0 week. In those three games, she recorded 123 assists, 39 digs, seven kills, three aces, and three blocks. Byrne set career bests against East Stroudsburg with 55 assists and 22 digs in the four-set match.  

Defensive Athlete of the Week

Shepherd

Claire Ellis

Freshman

Libero

Louisa, Va. / St. Catherine’s School

Claire Ellis recorded 56 digs in two matches this week. Against Lock Haven, she posted 27 digs, four assists, and two aces in the four-set victory for the Rams. The next day, Ellis added 29 digs, six assists, and one ace as Shepheard defeated Bloomsburg in four sets.

WEST

Athlete of the Week

Gannon

Lauren Sampson

Senior

Outside Hitter

Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Davidson

Lauren Sampson moved into 13th all-time in Gannon history with 1,086 career kills. This week she added 29 kills in three games played, and has recorded double-digit kills in 13 matches this season. Sampson also posted 11 aces, 11 digs, and seven blocks.

Hannah Vuylsteke

Senior

Libero

Hamilton, Ontario / Bishop Ryan Catholic

Hannah Vuylsteke helped Mercyhurst to a 2-0 week in conference play. She recorded 45 digs, 10 assists, and six aces in nine sets. The Lakers defeated Seton Hill 3-1 and Cal U 3-2.
