Pennsylvania College of Technology issued the following announcement.
The president of the Penn College Motorsports Association and the student organization’s adviser participated in the Toyota Green Grand Prix, held Oct. 22 on and around the famed Watkins Glen International Speedway.
Hunter S. Guyer, an information technology: network specialist concentration student from Fayetteville, and Christopher H. Van Stavoren, an assistant professor of automotive technology, took part in the 16th annual event, a fuel-economy competition held to promote innovation in sustainable transportation technologies.
The pair brought home five awards from the competition, which was held in strict adherence to pandemic protocols. (Guyer was also a participant in last year’s GGP, posting the best time in the autocross exhibition race.)
Among fuel mileage awards, the college’s 2012 Toyota Prius won Most Efficient 4-Cylinder Hybrid car, Most Efficient Gasoline Production Vehicle and the Prius Challenge (in which Guyer logged a 61-miles-per-gallon score). Guyer also drove the Prius in the event’s autocross competition and placed first in the 4-Cylinder Hybrid class. Due to those four victories, the college contingent won the Doris Bovee Memorial Award.
The motorsports association, open to any interested student, exposes members to a variety of activities throughout the academic year.
