State Senator Gene Yaw and State Representative Jamie Flick have announced a significant funding allocation for recreational projects in Lycoming County. The Commonwealth Financing Authority's Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program has awarded $330,000 to support two key projects aimed at enhancing park and recreational facilities in the area.
Senator Yaw expressed his enthusiasm for the funding, stating, "Funding for these projects will undoubtedly benefit our region and have a positive impact on recreational opportunities." He also acknowledged Rep. Flick's collaboration in securing these investments.
A substantial portion of the funds, amounting to $250,000, is earmarked for the Susquehanna River Walk Extension Trail Construction Project. This project involves completing a four-mile multi-use trail that will connect important areas within the greater Williamsport community. It aims to link with existing pathways such as the Lycoming Creek Bikeway and Susquehanna State Park. The extension is part of a larger regional initiative to complete the Triple Divide Trail, stretching 400 miles from Lake Ontario in New York to Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.
Rep. Flick shared his excitement about this development: “I’m thrilled to see this funding go towards projects that encourage residents and visitors to enjoy outdoor recreation in our community.” He highlighted how closing gaps in the trail system could boost tourism and local economic activity while promoting outdoor health benefits.
Additionally, $80,000 has been allocated for improvements at Young’s Woods Park. Planned enhancements include a walking trail with senior exercise amenities, bike racks, a rain garden, and pickleball facilities. Rep. Flick emphasized that these upgrades would bring Young’s Woods Park into full ADA compliance and better serve both neighborhood residents and families from surrounding areas.
The Commonwealth Financing Authority was created in 2004 as an independent agency under Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development to manage economic stimulus programs. In 2012, it received funds from the Marcellus Legacy Fund for planning and developing greenways, trails, parks, and beautification projects through its Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program.
