Alvernia University's Pottsville CollegeTowne is set to expand with the addition of a Schuylkill YMCA gymnastics facility, following the allocation of a $1 million state grant. This funding was secured through the efforts of Sen. Dave Argall and Rep. Tim Twardzik, in collaboration with local leaders.

Sen. Argall emphasized the transformative power of higher education in revitalizing older towns, stating, “We’ve seen time and time again the power higher education has to breathe new life into older towns.” He highlighted that what was once an abandoned grocery store now serves as a training ground for future professionals while expanding athletic opportunities in downtown Pottsville.

Rep. Twardzik noted the positive impact on community outreach, saying, “This grant funding expands Alvernia University’s Pottsville Campus and positive community outreach.” He added that the project would enhance student learning experiences and create new spaces within Alvernia’s CollegeTowne educational complex.

The site of Pottsville CollegeTowne was purchased by Alvernia University in 2021 after being vacant for years. The transformation into an educational hub was supported by $3 million in state funding and $2 million in federal funding secured by Congressman Dan Meuser. The campus began welcoming students in early 2023.

The newly allocated funds will be used to renovate unused space within the building to establish a Schuylkill YMCA gymnastics facility. Currently, 75 youth participate in gymnastics at Schuylkill YMCA, with over 200 more waiting for access. This development aligns with community leaders' goals to revitalize downtown Pottsville and foster communal engagement.

The grant was awarded through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, which supports economic development projects with regional significance.
