The Ivy League has announced its weekly awards in men's basketball, with University of Pennsylvania freshman guard Sam Brown receiving the Ivy League Rookie of the Week honor. This marks the third time this season that Brown has been recognized with this accolade, having previously won it twice consecutively in December.
Brown's recent performance against Dartmouth played a significant role in earning him this recognition. During Friday night's game, he scored 26 points, marking a personal and season high. This is the highest score by a Penn freshman since Ryan Betley scored 28 points against Brown on February 17, 2017. Notably, Brown successfully made his first six three-point shots and concluded the game with a 6-of-7 record from beyond the arc. This ties for the best three-point field goal performance by a Penn player during Steve Donahue's coaching tenure, matching Devon Goodman's achievement against Yale on February 28, 2020.
Currently, Brown ranks third among Penn players in scoring this season with an average of 11.1 points per game. He leads his team with 54 three-point baskets and stands third among Ivy players for overall three-pointers per game (2.5) and fourth for overall three-point percentage (.425). Additionally, Brown has accumulated 43 assists and maintains a 1.79 assist/turnover ratio.
Penn will host its final three games at home starting this weekend when they face Cornell on Friday at 8 p.m., followed by Columbia on Saturday at 7 p.m., as part of a traditional Ivy League weekend doubleheader at The Palestra.
