Playing in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees, the Penn College men's golf team secured a 34th place with a score of 305 on the first day of the NCAA Division III championships. The event took place at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nevada, where Peyton Mussina tied for 14th individually.
Mussina led his team with a bogey-free round, scoring a 3-under-par 69 on the par-72 course spanning 7,377 yards. His performance placed him among the top competitors in a field of 221 players. Will Orwig contributed to the team's total with a score of 76, tying for 121st place. Gavin Baer shot a 79 and tied for 169th, Gunner Redmond finished with an 81 and tied for 188th, while Trevor Keaton's score of 82 put him in a tie for 199th position. The team score was calculated using only the four lowest individual scores.
In the overall standings among teams, Methodist University led with a score of 271. Emory followed closely at second place with a score of 272, and Redlands held third place at 275. On an individual level, Jackson Klutznick from Emory topped the leaderboard with an impressive round of eight-under-par (64), while Jon McEwen from Washington and Lee was second after shooting a round of five-under-par (65).
The championship continues Wednesday at Legacy Golf Club on its par-72 course measuring slightly shorter at 7,077 yards. After this round, only the top eighteen teams will proceed along with six individuals not part of those advancing teams.
