The Senate Education Committee has taken steps to ensure parents are informed about the warning signs of type 1 diabetes. The committee approved House Bill 2185, which mandates that parents and guardians receive a fact sheet detailing these symptoms. The bill, introduced by Rep. Justin Fleming (D-105), aims to facilitate early detection of type 1 diabetes symptoms, potentially preventing serious health issues.
Rep. Fleming was motivated to introduce this legislation following his daughter's diagnosis with type 1 diabetes in 2020. The initiative has received bipartisan support within the committee.
Senator Dave Argall (R-29), who chairs the committee, commended Fleming for his efforts and personal story. "Missing a warning sign of a serious illness is any parent’s worst nightmare," Argall stated. "This legislation will protect kids and ensure that we’re all better aware of the warning signs of diabetes."
With committee approval secured, the bill now proceeds to the full Senate for further consideration.
