Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania issued the following announcement on Sept. 24.

In August, Lock Haven University TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) peer mentor and junior social work major, Madison Leister, was awarded a $750 scholarship by the Pennsylvania Association of TRIO Programs (PA TRIO). Leister’s application and many accomplishments, as well as her dedication to TRIO SSS and Upward Bound, attributed to her being chosen from the many applicants.

Leister’s association with TRIO programs began with her involvement with Upward Bound in high school, and continued to her present position as a TRIO SSS peer mentor at LHU. She excels as a role model for her mentees and serves as a stalwart example of the TRIO SSS program and its positive impact on students. She has also been involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters of America for 10 years and often volunteers at the Salvation Army. Leister, who is minoring in sociology, often states that her training as a peer mentor has helped her in her academic life and her professional pursuits.

The receipt of the PA TRIO Scholarship cements her dedication to TRIO and to her hard work as a student and as a peer mentor. Her involvement in TRIO SSS is crucial to the program, and TRIO SSS is proud of her achievement.

TRIO SSS serves 230 students at LHU, providing academic resources, financial support, professional development opportunities and social and cultural events. Community service projects are also built into the program each year. The goals of the TRIO SSS are to boost students’ grade point averages and increase their rates of remaining in college until graduation.

PA TRIO’s mission is to engage Pennsylvania TRIO program personnel in professional and leadership development, legislative affairs, increased communication, collaboration and support of student success and lifelong learning. Scholarships are given to selected college students who are nominated by their university’s TRIO programs to assist with the cost of tuition and other expenses.

The scholarship will be awarded at the annual PA TRIO Conference. This year, the PA TRIO 49th Annual Conference on “TRIO Full Steam Ahead: Engineering Our Students to Success” will be held Oct. 5-8 in State College.
