Quarry wins bronze at USA Archery Outdoor National Championship

Penn College freshman Trevor Quarry secured a bronze medal in the men's recurve category at the USA Archery Outdoor National Championship held in Dublin, Ohio. His performance contributed to the Wildcats' 26th-place finish amid what was described as one of the most challenging fields to date.

"Trevor has been shooting strong all year," said Penn College coach Chad Karstetter. "Coming in as a freshman and not having a lot of experience outdoors, coming to this event with 500-plus archers on the field at the same time and with the weather conditions — he shot strong." Karstetter noted that Quarry lost to an opponent who eventually won the championship. He expressed optimism about Quarry's future performances: "I look forward to seeing how he does in the next few years."

The merger of USA Archery and the U.S. Collegiate Archery Association earlier this year resulted in a record-breaking field of over 500 archers from 60 teams participating in this end-of-season event. Texas A&M emerged victorious, claiming the overall team title.

"The competition level definitely has increased," remarked Karstetter, acknowledging that new colleges, universities, and students have raised the stakes. He also mentioned that wind gusts reaching 30 mph added to the challenge.

Despite these difficulties, Penn College did not produce an All-American for the first time since 2001. To earn this distinction, archers must rank within the Top 10 based on their combined indoor and outdoor national scores. Quarry finished 12th among 59 competitors in men's recurve; senior Rylee Butler placed 13th among 59 in women's bowhunter; and freshman Sidney Alpaugh ranked 15th among 52 in men's bowhunter.

In team events, Alpaugh teamed up with freshman Zach Williamson and junior David Fox to reach the quarterfinals in men's bowhunter.

Five Wildcats were recognized for their academic achievements with Academic All-America honors: Butler, Fox, Alpaugh, Williamson, and freshman Ryan McCrickerd.
