Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania issued the following announcement on Nov. 8.

Lock Haven University recently awarded Tymir James, of Williamsport, the Shades of LHU Legacy Scholarship. James, a mid-level education major with a focus in mathematics, is in his third year at LHU.

Since joining The Haven Family in the summer of 2019, James, a first-generation college student, has worked his way to a GPA greater than 3.0. In addition to the Shades of LHU Legacy Scholarship, his hard work and dedication in the classroom have also earned him the Ira G. & Gilliam M. Masemore Scholarship.

“Receiving these scholarships is very motivating,” James said. “Being noticed for the hard academic work I’ve done pushes me to achieve more and do even greater things.”

“I’ve worked hard to overcome obstacles to ensure my success,” he added. “It means a lot to me to be recognized as a black student with a high GPA.”

Upon receiving his degree, James has his professional sights set on becoming a middle school teacher — specifically, eighth grade math.

He said he was led to LHU, eager to learn from the professors in Lock Haven University’s lauded education department, after developing relationships with numerous LHU-educated teachers who graduated from the program.

“The education program at LHU is great,” James said. “I personally know many teachers who graduated from LHU, so I was very familiar with the program’s reputation for producing phenomenal educators.”

Another aspect of his experience James has come to appreciate during his time at Lock Haven University is the wealth of support systems in place to aid students as they traverse their way through college.

“My advice for students is to take advantage of everything that the university offers,” he said. “From tutoring, visiting instructors during office hours, applying for scholarships and more. All of it will help you professionally, relationally and financially in the long run.”

“The instructors I’ve learned from care about so much more than just their curriculum. They want to prepare their students to be the best they can be in the future,” he added.
