Phase one of a project aimed at revitalizing downtown White Haven and improving connectivity with the Delaware and Lehigh (D&L) Trail has been granted $350,000 in state funding. This announcement was made by Representative Jamie Walsh (R-117) and Senator Dave Argall (R-29).
The project will enhance Main Street’s streetscape and link the D&L Trail at both ends of the borough. Planned developments include an 8-foot-wide multi-use trail along Main Street’s east side, a gateway over Main Street, and a small plaza with a gathering area. Additional improvements involve reconstructing sidewalks, curbing, crosswalks, and other beautification efforts.
Completion of this new trail section is expected to close a significant gap in the D&L Trail’s regional network.
“This grant is an important step forward in the revitalization of downtown White Haven,” stated Walsh. “By enhancing public spaces, improving accessibility and supporting local businesses, we are investing in the community’s long-term prosperity. This project will not only beautify the area but also foster a stronger sense of pride and connection among residents. I look forward to its competition and seeing the positive impact it will have on White Haven’s future.”
Argall expressed his support for local efforts: “Local leaders in White Haven have worked tirelessly to breathe new life into their town, despite facing significant challenges. This funding is the next step in turning this dream into a reality. With their acceptance into the Blueprint Communities program, the opening of the new entrance to the D&L Trail from Lehigh Gorge State Park, and new train excursions from Jim Thorpe and other communities, I’m convinced the borough’s best days are ahead!”
The Multimodal Transportation Fund awarded this funding as part of its initiative to encourage economic development while ensuring safe transportation systems. The Commonwealth Financing Authority approved these grants during its public meeting today.
