Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference issued the following announcement on Oct. 6.

QUICK HITS

CAL U – Cal U remains one of the top defenses in the country following another big shutout victory over Hurst last week, 37-0. The Vulcans are first in NCAA DII in scoring defense allowing 5.2 points per game after earning three shutout victories this season.

GANN – Gannon played a tough matchup against No. 15 IUP, but fell, 28-23. It was Gannon’s third loss this year by seven or less points.

SHU – After starting the season, 2-0, Seton Hill has not had a win in three weeks. The Griffins fell to Edinboro, 17-7 last week and have not scored more than 17 points in their last three games.

HURST – Mercyhurst was shutout against Cal U falling, 37-0. The Lakers offense continues to struggle having scored no more than 18 points this season. The Lakers are dead last in the PSAC in scoring offense averaging 9.6 points per game.

SHEP – The Shepherd offense continued to roll last week defeating Shippensburg, 59-27. Harlon Hill candidate Tyson Bagent continues to dominate in the air as the Rams are first in the country in passing offense, averaging 382.2 yards per contest.

LHU – Lock Haven fell on the road at Millersville, 31-29. In perhaps one of the most entertaining games of the year, matchups between the two teams continue to be a back-and-forth affair. Millersville holds the 6-4 record in their last 10 meetings, but the largest margin of victory in those meetings has been just 12 points.

WCU – WCU won a close home matchup against Bloomsburg, 21-20. Ja’Den McKenzie proved to be too much for the BU defense rushing for 121 yards and two TDs including 38 yards on WCU’s last scoring drive of the game, which ultimately was the decider.

SHIP – Ship fell to the high-powered offense of Shepherd last week, 59-27. Despite Shippensburg’s loss, they remain a program receiving votes in the AFCA National Poll. A lot of that has to do with quarterback play from Brycen Mussina who is a two-time PSAC Athlete of the Week. In Ship’s loss Saturday, he threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns.

KUTZ – The Golden Bears escaped a tough win last week over ESU, 21-14. The Kutztown defense held strong late keeping ESU to just 14 points despite the Warriors being the top rushing team in the PSAC. Defensively, Shawn Ortiz-Turber had a big interception for 14 yards in the contest.

BLOOM – The Huskies nearly knocked off West Chester last week losing by just one point, 21-20. Kaleb Monaco had a breakout game on the ground rushing for 103 yards on 18 carries for an average of 5.7 yards per carry. BU rushed for 134 total yards in the contest.

IUP – IUP still defeated Gannon 28-23 on homecoming and were led by another solid performance from Harry Woodbery, who threw for 221 yards and three touchdowns.

CLAR – Clarion still remains winless thus far in 2021 and were given no help from Slippery Rock last week getting shutout, 75-0. The Clarion defenders were trying to contain so much. Kareem Hamdan had 12 tackles total including 1.5 for loss.

SRU – Slippery Rock’s 75-0 win over Clarion was very historic for a program that prides itself on dominant offense. Rock now sit sixth in the nation in scoring offense and seventh in the nation in total offense at 491.2 total yards per game.

BORO – Edinboro earned its first victory last week in a 17-7 win over Seton Hill. Jordan Castelli led the team in both passing and rushing in the win throwing for 112 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 44 yards.

VILLE – Millersville got the win over Lock Haven thanks to some strong defensive play. Tyler Tate was named PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Week after a nine tackle, 3.5 sack and two forced fumbles. One of the fumbles was returned for a touchdown and two of his sacks came in the fourth quarter.

ESU – Although the Warriors lost to a tough Kutztown team, they still continue to pound it on the ground. Gunner Anglovich rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns with a long of 30 yards.
