Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania issued the following announcement on Sept. 29.

Karina Long, of Hummelstown, is the 2021-22 recipient of Lock Haven University’s Frederick Douglass Emerging Leader Scholarship. Long is an early childhood education senior at LHU.

Long received the scholarship for her leadership skills and civic involvement on campus, including her work as a member of the Social Justice Task Force and Student Athletic Advisory Committee. A two-sport athlete, Long is also the recipient of additional scholarships as a member of LHU’s track and field and field hockey teams.

“I wanted an opportunity to continue both track and field and field hockey and LHU was able to provide that option for me,” Long said. “Once I met my coaches, saw the campus and saw the academic opportunities LHU could provide, I knew it was the right school for me.”

Since arriving on campus, Long said she’s truly enjoyed being part of a tight-knit community of professors and coaches who are extremely supportive and focused on seeing her succeed

Earning multiple scholarships has allowed Long to focus on academics and athletics without the burden of financial concerns. “My scholarships have enabled me to put my academics at the forefront of my college experience without having to worry about finances,” she said. “Receiving these scholarships is so meaningful because they’ve reduced the amount of student loans that I would’ve needed, which will help set me up for financial success after graduating.”

Long is especially proud of receiving the Frederick Douglass Emerging Leader Scholarship and says it means a lot to her to be recognized for her involvement on campus. “I’m glad that I am seen as a leader and hopefully it means I’m having an impact on other minority students at LHU,” she added.

Long is appreciative of LHU’s alumni and their willingness to help current students. “The former LHU students that I have met always have good things to say about their time at The Haven and they are always so eager to do whatever they can to help current students succeed,” she said.

Upon graduating from LHU, Long plans to attend graduate school to pursue a master’s degree and  ultimately become an elementary school teacher and coach.
