Two projects in the Tamaqua area have been granted state funding to enhance transportation infrastructure and safety, according to a joint announcement by Rep. Jamie Barton (R-124) and Sen. Dave Argall (R-29). The funding aims to create jobs and improve road safety.

Lehigh Anthracite has received $500,000 for the construction of a 1,200-foot rail siding. This development will facilitate the transport of anthracite coal to steel manufacturers by rail instead of trucks, thereby reducing traffic congestion and vehicle emissions.

Another $500,000 was awarded to Provco Pinegood Tamaqua, LLC for widening Claremont Avenue (State Route 309) at its intersection with Tide Road. The improvements include separate left and right turn lanes to ease traffic flow and enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians. These changes are timely as a major convenience store with gas facilities is planned near this location.

Rep. Barton emphasized the importance of transportation in rural communities: “Transportation is often discussed in the context of big cities, but it’s just as important in our rural communities.” He highlighted that these projects would significantly impact the local area by facilitating goods shipping through Tamaqua and providing safer options for residents.

Sen. Argall added that these initiatives would lead to job creation and safer travel: “These projects will create many new jobs and make our traveling in our area safer.” He acknowledged the collaborative effort with local leaders to secure this competitive state funding.

The financial support comes from the Multimodal Transportation Fund, which promotes economic development through grants aimed at ensuring safe and reliable transportation systems. The Commonwealth Financing Authority approved these grants during a public meeting today.
