A section of Interstate 180 in Lycoming County has been officially named the Kenneth C. Larson Jr. Memorial Highway, following a recent sign unveiling ceremony in Williamsport. The initiative was led by Senator Gene Yaw (R-23), who sponsored legislation to honor the late Kenneth C. Larson Jr., a veteran and engineer recognized for his contributions to Pennsylvania’s transportation infrastructure.
“Ken Larson was an accomplished engineer and a visionary whose leadership helped shape the very roads we travel on today,” said Yaw at the event. “His legacy of innovation, mentorship and public service deserves to be remembered by all who benefit from the work he dedicated his life to.”
Larson, a Bucknell University graduate and U.S. Navy Reserve veteran, began his career with the Department of Forests and Waters before moving into leadership roles within the Department of Highways and PennDOT. In 1966, he became the youngest appointed district engineer, managing major construction projects across several counties.
He contributed significantly to developing key transportation corridors such as parts of U.S. Route 15 and Interstate 80, introducing computer-aided drafting into state design processes early on. After his tenure in public service, Larson co-founded what is now known as Larson Design Group, an engineering firm based in Lycoming County.
Ashley Larson, granddaughter of Ken Larson, spoke at the ceremony: “So many have spoken about Ken as a leader and engineer, but Ken was a family man through and through. He never missed a game, dance recital or in my case a theater performance. We’re incredibly proud of his legacy and very thankful for this wonderful recognition in his honor.”
Beyond infrastructure projects, Larson was also noted for mentoring young engineers and supporting efforts to retain skilled professionals locally.
