Penn College senior Peyton Mussina has secured a spot in the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship for the second consecutive year. On Wednesday, Mussina scored a one-over-par 73, bringing his two-day total to 145 and placing him in a tie for fourth place. This performance allows him to continue competing for another two days.
The Penn College Wildcats’ team season concluded with a total score of 654 over two days, placing them 41st out of 43 teams. Only the top 18 teams and six individuals not on those teams will advance to play on Thursday and Friday.
On Wednesday, Penn College recorded a score of 337 at Cobblestone Creek Country Club, which was 20 strokes higher than their Tuesday performance at Midvale Country Club.
Mussina achieved two birdies on Wednesday, adding to his four from the opening round where he tied for 10th place among 225 competitors. Brady Handy also contributed with three birdies on Wednesday, ending with an overall score of 166 and tying for 192nd place. Other team members included Will Orwig (172), Logan Gawlinski (175), and Gunner Redmond (176).
In the team standings, Illinois Wesleyan leads with a total score of 595, followed by Kenyon and Huntingdon just two strokes behind. Carnegie Mellon holds fourth place at 598, Aurora is fifth at 600, and Methodist College ranks sixth at 601.
Individually, Bethel’s Will Karkoc leads after shooting under par for both days with scores of 68-70—138. Edward Coffren from Lynchburg follows in second place with a two-day total of 141, while Kevin Mu from Emory is third at 142. Mussina is among four golfers tied for fourth.
Mussina is set to tee off from hole 10 at Midvale course on Thursday morning as he aims to achieve All-America honors following Friday’s final round.
