The Penn College Wildcats softball team won two nonconference games against Mount Aloysius on Apr. 9 at the Lumber Yards, increasing their winning streak to eight and improving their season record to 19-3.
The doubleheader highlights the team’s continued strong performance this season. Maintaining a consistent winning record can be important for postseason positioning and overall team morale.
In the first game, Payton Crawford gave Penn College an early lead with a double in the first inning, followed by Alivia Bizzarri adding another run with a double in the sixth. Sofia Mileto had three hits including a triple and scored once, while Crawford contributed two hits. Pitcher Mackenzi Tice improved her record to 11-1 after pitching a complete game five-hitter with ten strikeouts and two walks.
During the second game, sacrifices from Crawford and Astyn Calaman put Penn College ahead early. The Wildcats added four runs in the fourth inning with RBIs from Mileto, Crawford, Calaman, and Taylor Brown. Bizzarri made it 7-0 in the fifth inning before Mount Aloysius closed within two runs by scoring five times in the sixth. However, Penn College held on for a 7-5 victory by retiring Mount Aloysius in order during the seventh inning.
Mileto again led offensively with three hits and two runs scored; Crawford and Brown each had two hits as well. Bizzarri earned her fourth win of the season after pitching over five innings, allowing two earned runs on nine hits while walking twice and striking out twice. Laney Wilson recorded her first save of the year after pitching one-and-two-thirds innings.
Penn College is scheduled to return to action Saturday at home against Penn State Berks.
