Penn College’s men’s golf team achieved a 10th-place finish in the spring season-opening Pennsylvania Classic at Penn State’s Blue Course, with a team total of 619 over the weekend in a 17-team field. The Wildcats’ standout performer was Peyton Mussina, who tied for 13th in a field of 94 players.
The team found itself placed 11th after the opening round on Saturday, scoring 313. On Sunday, they improved with a score of 306. Mussina led the team with rounds of 73 and 75 on the par 72, 6,605-yard course, resulting in a total score of 148. Other contributors included Gunner Redmond, who posted 81-73 for a 154 total and tied for 34th place. Brady Handy recorded 79-79 to tie for 47th, while Will Orwig scored 80-79 for a 159 total to tie for 52nd. Logan Gawlinski finished with 84-80, placing him 61st. The team total factored in only the low four scores.
In the competition, Allegheny emerged victorious with a total of 581. The runners-up were Washington and Jefferson with 591, Westminster with 592, and Penn State Altoona with 593. Also above Penn College were Juniata with 604, Moravian with 615, and both Penn State Altoona “B” and St. Vincent with 617, followed by Mount Aloysius with 618. Teams finishing behind Penn College included Grove City, Penn State Harrisburg, Thiel, Pitt-Bradford, La Roche, Penn State Abington, and Wilson College.
On the individual front, Carter Hassenplug of Allegheny and Peter Nusbaum from host Penn State Altoona shared the highest honor, finishing with 140s.
Looking ahead, Penn College is set to participate in The Moselem Cup, scheduled for April 7-8 at Moselem Springs Golf Club in Fleetwood.
