State Sen. Gene Yaw has announced the upcoming “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day,” scheduled for this Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The initiative, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), encourages residents of Bradford, Lycoming, Sullivan, Tioga, and Union counties to safely dispose of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Drop-off locations are available throughout each county, with details provided on the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Program’s website.
Yaw highlighted the significance of the event, stating, “Take Back Day is an excellent way to reduce drug abuse and misuse across the board. It’s not only about preventing people from stealing or abusing prescription drugs, but it’s also about preventing accidental use and overdose, especially by our senior population, and ensuring that unused drugs are disposed of in an environmentally safe manner.”
During the last National Take Back Day in October 2024, law enforcement agencies in Pennsylvania collected nearly 27,000 pounds of unused or expired medication. Since the inception of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative in 2010, the DEA and its partners have collected over 19 million pounds of prescription medications nationwide.
