Mussina leads Wildcats as they stand at NCAA golf championship

Penn College’s men’s golf team finished 38th out of 43 teams after the first round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship. The event took place at Midvale Country Club in Penfield, New York. Peyton Mussina led the Wildcats with an even-par 72, tying for 10th among 225 competitors.

The team scored a total of 317 during the afternoon session on the course, which measures 6,632 yards. Mussina recorded a front nine score of 35 and a back nine score of 37. Logan Gawlinski followed with a score of 79, placing him tied for 135th. Brady Handy and Will Orwig both scored 83, tying for 194th, while Gunner Redmond shot an 84, tying for 201st. The team’s total score is calculated from the four lowest individual scores.

Illinois Wesleyan led the team standings with a score of 290. Individually, Edward Coffren from Lynchburg and Will Karkoc from Bethel, Minnesota each shot a round-leading score of 68.

On Wednesday morning, Penn College will compete at Cobblestone Creek Country Club’s longer course measuring 6,866 yards. The goal is to secure a position among the top 18 teams or as one of six individuals not on those teams to continue competing into Thursday and Friday’s rounds.
