The Center for Rural Pennsylvania Board of Directors convened its May meeting at the Corry Higher Education Council in Erie County. The board met with local leaders, educators, and stakeholders to discuss rural education initiatives and regional development in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Senator Gene Yaw, Chairman of the Center for Rural Pennsylvania Board of Directors, remarked on the importance of local collaboration: “The Corry Higher Education Council is a strong example of how local collaboration and leadership can expand educational access in rural communities.”

The Corry Higher Education Council was established in 1991 to address adult education and workforce training needs. It serves as a nonprofit organization within one of Pennsylvania’s nine Community Education Council regions, offering career training, adult enrichment, and leadership programs.

Matt Platz, Executive Director of the Corry Higher Education Council, expressed gratitude for hosting the board meeting: “Communities like Corry have so many challenges but we are fortunate to have great partners throughout the state.” He emphasized the productive discussions held during a morning roundtable with community leaders.

Senator Scott Hutchinson praised Corry Hi-Ed’s efforts: “The Corry Higher Education Council transforms lives and strengthens our communities through its commitment to delivering accessible, high-quality education.”

Representative Jake Banta shared his personal connection to rural life and his focus on creating opportunities through state funding. He stated: “I grew up in a small rural town not far from there… My goal is to direct those funds to create opportunities.”

Representative Dan Moul highlighted successful partnerships: “Rural communities like Corry are proving that with the right partnerships and local leadership, it’s possible to overcome real challenges.”

Dr. Kyle C. Kopko underscored place-based solutions’ significance: “Meeting directly with community leaders in Corry reinforces the importance of place-based solutions.” He acknowledged organizations like Corry Hi-Ed for closing gaps in education and workforce training.

This visit aligns with the Center’s ongoing initiative to engage directly with rural communities across Pennsylvania.
