On Sunday, June 15, Father’s Day will be celebrated as a day to honor the role of fathers in family and society. An advocate for shared parenting has expressed gratitude towards fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures who provide love, patience, and strength.
Statistics indicate that without shared parenting, children face increased risks such as drug or alcohol abuse, school dropout rates, emotional or behavioral problems, and teenage parenthood. “Simply put, fathers matter!” was emphasized in support of this view.
The advocate is actively working on child custody reform laws and introduced House Bill 1499 in March. This bill aims to ensure fairness in custody determinations and protect children’s rights to have equal access to both parents. The push for reform is driven by personal experiences in family court battles for equal custody.
The current system is criticized for financially benefiting from separating children from their parents through Title IV-D funding. In Lycoming County alone, $1.2 million per year was received from these funds during a custody battle.
Fathers across various states have shared their stories supporting the need for reform. One father stated: “Seeing someone stand up for father’s rights the way you have means more than I can put into words.” Another expressed gratitude: “I want to personally thank you for championing this critical cause.”
Others voiced similar sentiments: “As a victim of the court system… it is about time someone fight for 50/50,” while another said: “Although I am not a Republican… I am extremely impressed with your vision for child custody.”
A Pennsylvanian parent remarked: “While we are on opposite sides of the political spectrum… thank you for fighting this fight.” Whit Nanna shared how 50/50 custody positively impacted his children’s lives by fostering stability and reducing conflicts with his former spouse.
This Father’s Day acknowledges dads who persist despite systemic challenges. Their presence and roles are vital.
