HARRISBURG – Two bills sponsored by Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) to support the long-term care workforce have been approved by the Senate Education Committee.

"Too many of our families, including mine, have faced the difficult decision of moving a parent or grandparent into a long-term care center," said Sen. Argall. "The professionals who make sure they are cared for and respected have an extremely important job yet are facing increasing challenges because of workforce shortages. These bills are essential."

The bills aim to address the growing need for long-term care workers in Pennsylvania, as the number of residents aged 65 and older is expected to double by 2040. Despite this demographic shift, there has been a 14% decrease in long-term care professionals in the state from 2019 to 2022.

Senate Bill 1102, one of the proposed bills, would expand training opportunities for nurse aides and broaden eligibility for individuals to take the nurse aide competency exam. Industry professionals believe that these changes would make it easier for individuals to pursue careers in long-term care while maintaining high standards of qualification.

Regarding Senate Bill 1104, it would enable high school juniors and seniors to earn credits towards graduation by working in long-term nursing care facilities, personal care homes, or assisted living residences. This initiative is designed to facilitate quicker entry into the workforce for students interested in the field.

Both bills are now set to advance to the full Senate for further consideration.
